luxrail illuminated LED handrail system

Application ANSI and ADA compliant luxrail, is an indoor/outdoor handrail that delivers functional illumination. Two intensities may be specified; "standard light output" & "high output". The standard light output version delivers illuminance levels appropriate for exterior applications (3 to 4 footcandles at grade) as well as dark interior environments with low ambient illumination levels, (i.e. theatres, themed environments). The high output version delivers illuminance levels applicable to interior environments - providing in excess of 10 footcandles along the path of egress (ANSI required). Independent photometric test reports and IES Format data are available upon request from io Lighting.

Boing Boing: Songbird, the "open source iTunes killer," flies today

Boing Boing: Songbird, the "open source iTunes killer," flies today

screenshot_library

looks very iTunes-ish, may be very cool if you can build your own custom media player with store integration

The Songbird site is overloaded right now, but here's a download mirror, and another. Some discussion on this digg thread.

A team led by ex-Winamp-er Rob Lord today released a preview edition of Songbird, a desktop media player that offers an open source alternative to services like Apple's iTunes and the Windows Media Player. Instead of connecting to one locked store full of DRMmed goods, it can connect to any and all available music (and video) on the internet.

BB: So why did you guys build this?
RL: People should have more choice about music and video formats, and where they get their music. Imagine what your experience of the web wold be like if IE connected only to microsoft.com. That's what digital networked media players are like today. Fairplay [Ed. Note: Apple's proprietary DRM] is the 8-track of our generation, and those formats may become obsolete a lot sooner than people using those services realize. Songbird can connect to any a la carte media store -- downloadable music, radio, video, P2P networks, and classes of services that haven't been created yet. Services like iTunes -- where everybody has to shop from the same store -- are like walled garden online services back in the early days. AOL, Prodigy. That's how we connected to the 'net then. Songbird is to iTunes what the Firefox browser is to those old, limiting online services. It opens up the whole internet to you as a music browsing experience.

BB: Apart from the ability to connect to lots of different sources, what will Songbird do differently?
RL: The opportunity to innovate is stymied by architecture. All of the popular media players out there have pretty much the same feature set on the desktop -- when you leave aside what's possible when you connect to the internet, they all do pretty much the same thing these days. Rip, mix, burn, play, organize playlists. But plug them in to the internet, and there's so much more they could be doing. The possibilities for networked services are totally untapped. For instance, [Winamp co-creator] Justin Frankel created a collaborative jamming service, and you can't do that inside any commercial media player now. You'll be able to do those kinds of things inside Songbird.

BB: What's in it for those providers?
RL: It's an open format, so they can do deep integration into our player, and reach new audiences. We built Songbird on the Mozilla Foundation's XULRunner platform, which is also used by Firefox and the Thunderbird email client. Firefox is very widely used now, there are 400 extensions, everybody knows it's as much of a movement as a piece of software. The difference between the Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers is substantial, but it's nothing like the difference between iTunes or Windows Music and Songbird.

BB: Songbird's logo is a cute, rotund, whistling birdie -- but what's up with that puff of gas coming out of his posterior? Is your mascot farting?
RL: Sorry, bad reception (SSSHHCSRRGRRR CRACKLE)

Socket unveils petite Go Wi-Fi! E300 SDIO card - infoSync World

Socket unveils petite Go Wi-Fi! E300 SDIO card - infoSync World:

Updating its WLAN offering, Socket Communications has announced the introduction of its Go Wi-Fi! E300 SDIO card. At a length of 40 mm, and a weight of 4 g, the card is considerably shorter and also somewhat lighter than Socket's previous Wi-Fi SDIO card, which the Go Wi-Fi! E300 is replacing. Despite its small size, the card incorporates a LED to display connection status, and is, according to Socket Communications, three times as fast as its predecessor.

Compatible with Wi-Fi 802.11b, the card supports WEP and WPA encryption standards including WPA-PSK as well as 802.1x authentication with EAP-TLS or PEAP under the Windows Mobile 2003 platform with which the card is solely compatible. Available immediately worldwide for $89 USD, the card comes bundled with Socket's Wi-Fi Companion software for Windows Mobile 2003.

Inhabitat: faucet lit with temperature sensitive LED

Inhabitat: faucet lit with temperature sensitive LED: hansa4

Spotted on Mocoloco, Germany's Hansa has come out with these futuristic bathroom fixtures. The metal spigot has the top portion removed, creating a visible canyon for your water to run through. As if these rectangular minimalist fixtures weren't beautiful enough, they also feature temperature sensitive LEDs lining the walls of the canyon, which illuminate the water in different colors depending on the temperature of the water (red=hot, pink=warm, blue=cold). Not that anyone really needs colored light help to discern the temperature of running water — but it is a cool feature none-the-less. Who knows, maybe it could help prevent those nasty surprises you sometimes get when washing your hands or stepping into the bath a little too quickly.

Victorinox retroALOX: 1GB aluminum swiss army knife

TrustedReviews - The UK's Premier Source for IT Reviews & News: 1555-2

But it’s not just the capacity that makes this new SwissMemory Victorinox cool, it’s also a very different design from the previous version. Whereas the original device I had was finished in the traditional Swiss Army red plastic, this one is flanked by hard wearing textured aluminium.

Hiding inside the swanky aluminium casing you’ll find a pair of scissors, a knife and a nail file/screwdriver. Unlike the previous SwissMemory Victorinox, there’s no pen or torch integrated into this one. Of course you can buy a SwissMemory Victorinox with the red finish, which includes both the pen and a white LED torch, but it will cost you a little bit more.

The 1GB USB memory key folds out easily and can be plugged directly into a USB socket. The memory key can be removed completely from the knife, which is handy if you need to take it with you on a plane. Once removed it becomes apparent that this is one of the smallest 1GB memory keys you’re likely to find.

120 Volt LED Light Bulb, 1.3 Watts, 18 LEDs at Cyberguys.com

120 Volt LED Light Bulb, 1.3 Watts, 18 LEDs at Cyberguys.com
P8251A
Imagine a light bulb that lasts 10 years and consumes only 2-3 watts of power... LED technology has made it possible! These LED replacement bulbs are smaller than standard bulbs and screw into standard light sockets. Perfect for hard-to-reach installations where bulbs are difficult to change. If left on for 12 hours a day for a year, one of these bulbs would use about $1 worth of electricity.

USB disco dance floor from MIT

1E Disco Dance Floor Those wild and crazy guys at MIT are at it again.
colors
As you probably know, it is never a good idea to discuss anything at 3:00 AM. At some point Grant and Scott started talking about computer controlled dance floors. This was a very unfortunate night. Then we discussed color-mixing red, green, and blue LEDs. This was a far worse night which led to many seemingly drunken declarations of the need for "multiple shades of purple." Gradually our concepts got more and more ambitious, and we toyed with the engineering problems involved. Neither of us was particularly serious, and we certainly didn't expect anything to result from the conversations. Unfortunately, it turns out that the more you talk about something that isn't serious, the more likely you are to forget that it isn't. Before long, you're spewing some nonsense about a vast USB controlled dance floor that can play video streams and people are looking at you like you're serious.
  • 1,536 LEDs
  • 128 square feet
  • 4,096 colors
  • 30 frames/second
  • 20,000 hand-soldered connections
  • ...best parties ever!

Shelby_GR1 side 1

Shelby_GR1 side 1, originally uploaded by seafoam.

Ford spent $5 million developing this car, and another $2 million just building this particular one. This is the first and only one of this type in existance, and was completed yesterday afternoon in California. In January of 2004 it was sketched out on paper. In February a full size mockup was molded in clay. Now, a year later, the real thing is on it's way to the Detroit Auto Show. This car wasn't a mockup or a shell. The sculptor, designer and escort for the car is hoping it will take best of show this year. And Kitty Hawk delivered it! This is the 2007 Ford Shelby GR1 concept car. If Ford decides to put it into production, potential buyers can expect to pay around $200,000 for it. The entire exterior of the car is polished aluminum, and it has liquid cooled LED headlights. It was amazing seeing this car up close and talking to the project leader for the studio that built it.

News From CES - Palm-sized DLP Video Projectors Attract Attention

News From CES - Palm-sized DLP Video Projectors Attract Attention: "Palm-sized DLP Video Projectors Attract Attention In what may turn out to be a very interesting new consumer electronics product category, both the Texas Instruments and InFocus booths at CES displayed working prototypes of small palm-sized DLP video projectors. The projectors shown were powered by a TI DLP chip with an LED light source instead of a high wattage lamp, to reduce heat generation and power consumption. Although not as bright as their larger cousins, both units on display were capable of projecting a solid 27-inch image in a darkened room setting. Although specifications are still being finalized, the Mitsubishi and InFocus branded projectors are expected to hit store shelves by the end of 2005, with an expected price of about $600."

Internal RF Adapter for Almost Any Remote (installs in place of a batter)

Internal RF Adapter for Almost Any Remote: "You love your remote control, but wouldn't you like it even better if you could use it from any room in the house? This internal RF adapter will allow you to keep your existing remote control but send its signals from up to 100 feet away, and no direct line-of-sight is needed. Here's how it works: You install the transmitter in place of one of your remote's batteries. This transmitter converts the remote control's infrared signals to radio frequency signals that can travel through walls and doors. These signals go to the small, AC-powered receiver, which is placed facing the components you wish to control. The receiver then converts the signals back to IR signals and sends them to your components, all in a fraction of a second! You now have the freedom to go from room to room and control your audio/video components from up to 100 feet away.

The internal RF adapter has a AAA-size transmitter and AA-size sleeve, so it can extend your existing remote control's operating range, regardless of which type of battery it requires. It will work with almost any remote control you'd like. Want to use it with more than one remote? Not a problem: add as many internal RF adapters as you'd like. For homes where maintaining the décor is a prime concern, the system can be hidden from view by using the included Bright Eye Emitter, an unobtrusive, adhesive-backed LED at the end of a 6-foot cable.
