Slick: Vaio Zoom Concept is Exactly How We Want Laptops to Look in the Future - Gizmodo

Slick: Vaio Zoom Concept is Exactly How We Want Laptops to Look in the Future - Gizmodo: "This Vaio Zoom laptop concept is one of the coolest we've seen. Featuring a holographic glass screen that goes transparent and a keyboard that turns opaque when turned off, it's slick and beautiful. And sure, a touch keyboard like this would be extremely annoying without haptic feedback and screens like that don't really exist yet, but it's an interesting look at what we'll be playing with a few years down the line. Despite the fact that this isn't an official Sony concept, we still think they should work at making it a reality. Check another image after the jump."

Sony VAIO TZ Review

Sony VAIO TZ Review: "The Sony TZ is the latest offering from Sony in the ultra portable market. With its small size and extreme low weight, it is a must on any business traveler's notebook list. The Sony TZ combines a new LED backlight display, solid state drive, over-sized battery, and ultra low voltage processors from Intel to make it an all around extended battery performer. Read on to find out how the paper specs stack up in real world use."

DailyTech - NBC Universal to Offer Free TV Show Downloads

DailyTech - NBC Universal to Offer Free TV Show Downloads: "According to The New York Times, NBC Universal isn’t stopping there. The media conglomerate will offer a new online service called NBC Direct. With NBC Direct, customers will be able to download TV shows to a Windows-based PC for free immediately after they have aired. Once downloaded, the episodes would be viewable for one week."

install pfsense on a CF card

Having just gone through my first pfsense & m0n0wall installation *yawn* I thought I would share and record this before I forget. Installing pfsense on a compact flash can be pain since the embedded images are meant to be used on a small appliance device that doesn't have VGA support. You will hear the line that it supports serial access only.

If you try to boot up a CF card with the regular embedded image you will get a message that looks like this:

Searching for Boot Record from IDE-0..OK

BTX Loader 1.00 BTX version is 1.01 Consoles: internal video/keyboard BIOS drive C: is disk0 BIOS 639KB/257024kB available memory

FreeBSD/i386 bootstrap loader, Revision 1.1 (sullrich@builder.livebsd.com, Sun Oct 29 01:30:00 UTC 2006) Loading /boot/defaults/loader.conf /

and then it hangs. It is actually working in the background, just not echoed to the screen.

In order to get pfsense onto your compact flash card with vga support you will need a 3rd party modified version of the image. Hacom is currently a source for those images:

Network Appliances \ pfSense Appliances \ pfSense Firewall Software

When you get there, you will see file names like this:

You will notice that there are several version of each firmware:

pfSense-1.2-RC2-1gb-ad0.img.gz

The first part is the firmware version, in this case it's version 1.2 RC2.

pfSense-1.2-RC2-1gb-ad0.img.gz

The second portion is the the size of the compact flash card you will be using not RAM (e.g.128, 256, 512, 1gb). The example is for a 1 GB memory card. They have already expanded the images to make up to that size usable, I'm guessing this is much the way a Tivo hard drive upgrade works).

pfSense-1.2-RC2-1gb-ad0.img.gz

The next part is the location of the CF card on your IDE chain (e.g. ad0, ad2, da0). I'm no expert but I believe this is what they mean:

  • ad0: primary master IDE (/dev/ad0)
  • ad1: primary slave IDE (/dev/ad1)
  • ad2: secondary master IDE (/dev/ad2)
  • ad3: secondary slave IDE (/dev/ad3)
  • da0: USB memory stick (/dev/da0)

and the final section just shows that it is a gzipped image.

To write these onto a compact flash card, unzip them and use physdiskwrite.

http://m0n0.ch/wall/physdiskwrite.php

  1. Connect your compact flash to your computer.
  2. save phydiskwrite.exe and the ungzipped pfsense image (pfSense-1.2-RC2-1gb-ad0.img) to the same directory
    • c:\temp\phydiskwrite.exe
    • c:\temp\pfSense-1.2-RC2-1gb-ad0.img
  3. open DOS window
    • start > run > cmd
  4. navigate to the directory
    • c:
    • cd \temp
  5. start phydiskwrite
    • phydiskwrite pfSense-1.2-RC2-1gb-ad0.img
    • if the image file you're writing to the compact flash card is larger than 2GB then you may need to use the "-u" switch. Currently 1Gb is the largest size downloadable.
      • phydiskwrite -u pfSense-1.2-RC2-1gb-ad0.img
  6. phydiskwrite will now ask for which device to write to. If you pick the wrong one you could over write your hard drive. Make absolutely sure before you select one.
    • Roadkil's Disk Image is another utility to write an image and is GUI based, it looks friendlier than phydiskwrite, but I haven't used it before. Try at your own risk.
  7. Get those thumbs twiddling. If you are writing the 1GB image, it will take a looooooong time, over an hour.
  8. Properly drop the compact flash using the Safely Disconnect Hardware utility in your system tray.
  9. YOU'RE DONE!!!!!!!!!!!

dryers and stupid clothing companies

There should be a rule. EVERYTHING CAN GO IN THE DRYER UNLESS IT SAYS IT CAN'T! If the clothes will shrink if they go anywhere near heat then there should be a label on them with exact instructions on what should be done with them. I don't see labels on each individual sock I own, they all go in the dryer. 100% cotton into the dryer. And what's with the stores and you ask them if the clothes will shrink. Every store says it might shrink a little bit in length. It won't shrink in width...

Medbroadcast: Report: Cardboard main ingredient in steamed buns sold as Beijing street food

Infections - Signs, Symptoms, Causes & Treatment - Medbroadcast:
BEIJING (AP) - Chopped cardboard, softened with an industrial chemical and made tasty with pork flavouring, is a main ingredient in batches of steamed buns sold in one Beijing neighbourhood, state television said...

"What's in the recipe?" the reporter asks. "Six to four," the man says.

"You mean 60 per cent cardboard? What is the other 40 per cent?" asks the reporter. "Fatty meat," the man replies.

The bun maker and his assistants then give a demonstration on how the product is made.

Squares of cardboard picked from the ground are first soaked to a pulp in a plastic basin of caustic soda - a chemical base commonly used in manufacturing paper and soap - then chopped into tiny morsels with a cleaver. Fatty pork and powdered seasoning are stirred in.

Soon, steaming servings of the buns appear on-screen. The reporter takes a bite.

"This baozi filling is kind of tough. Not much taste," he says. "Can other people taste the difference?"

"Most people can't. It fools the average person," the maker says. "I don't eat them myself."

The police eventually show up and shut down the operation

Hands-on with T-Mobile HotSpot @Home - Engadget Mobile

Hands-on with T-Mobile HotSpot @Home - Engadget Mobile:
GSM / WiFi handoff is a brilliant idea in theory -- but to be usable, it's gotta be seamless, unnoticeable, and virtually effortless for the user. So far, the national carriers have failed to deliver any solution -- let alone a usable one -- so how does T-Mobile stack up? The Phone Fairy recently dropped off a Nokia 6086 and Linksys WRT56G-TM router to have a go with T-Mobile's just-announced HotSpot @Home service, and our initial impressions are fairly positive. In brief: setup was a snap, the phone's basic but well-designed, GSM / WiFi handoffs were hit or miss, and for ten bones a month, it seems like a square deal. Read on for more, and don't forget to peep the gallery!

WiFi Paint Security

http://tech.blorge.com/Structure:%20/2007/03/24/new-paint-offers-wireless-protection/

"Assuming" this paint works, wouldn't it have to cover every square inch of surface?  That's okay if you work in a dungeon but what if you are in a regular office that has windows?  Or have the TV boardroom with floor to ceiling glass windows?  Would you need to put in a painted revolving door to ensure any of those sneaky wifi signals don't get out when someone opens a door to the outside?

Forget WEP and WPA; I'm switching over to the EM-SEC Coating System, a recently revealed paint developed by EM-SEC Technologies that acts as an electromagnetic fortress, allowing a wireless network to be contained within painted walls without fear of someone tapping in or hacking wireless networks.

The EM-SEC Coating System is clearly the most secure option aside from stringing out the CAT5, and can be safely used to protect wireless networks in business and government facilities.

Stupid user tricks: Eleven IT horror stories

http://www.itbusiness.ca/it/client/en/home/News.asp?id=43856&PageMem=2

Security silliness
Security should be everyone's job, from CTO to administrative assistant. It's surprising how few organizations recognize this.
I think back to a time right after a fairly large network upgrade. All weekend, day and night, had been spent migrating a nightmare network from a hodgepodge of Windows 95/98/ME and even OS/2 clients with NetWare and Windows NT servers to a clean, homogenous utopia of redundant Windows 2000 Servers on the back and Windows XP Professional desktops on the front. Things hadn't gone quite as smoothly as we'd hoped, so instead of finishing up on Sunday afternoon, we were still putting final tweaks in place on Monday morning.
After we did our last test (making sure all local tape backups were working properly) it was about noon. (Most users by now had logged in, been informed that they needed to choose a new password in accordance with our medium-strong password guidelines, and had chosen a new password.) I stumbled bleary-eyed into the lunchroom for my umpteenth caffeine fix. Chugging my Coke, I almost missed it while mincing out of the lunchroom. But it grabbed my attention from the corner of my eye and caused Coca-Cola to shoot from my schnoz like some enraged soda dragon.
“Password List.” Yes, every user's new password along with IT and even some specific switch passwords had been printed out by a well-meaning secretary and posted in the lunchroom. After they pried my hands from her throat, she explained that she just figured it'd be easier to post them there than to answer all the phone calls when users inevitably forgot them. So she went around and collected them (in my name), built her list, and posted it.
Solution:  User training. Passwords should not be regarded as obstacles but as keys for very important locks. Users must be made aware of such concepts, not simply dropped into new environments. If the secretary had been given a clue, she never would have done it, but the only training this company ever gave her was how to use Word.
Moral:  Preaching may be a pain, but it can sure stop a lot of FUBAR stupidity before it gets very far.

Ultimate weirdness
This one won our Deepest Chuckle Award. Dave Schultz related an incident in which he tagged a note to a network laser printer informing users that if print quality suffered enough to warrant a toner cartridge replacement, they should first “shake a few times to yield a few additional copies.”
Schultz was later berated because a user suffered a work-related back injury by reading the note, then picking up the entire HP LaserJet 4000 and trying to shake the printer back and forth.
Solution: Shoot the user, he's lame now, anyway.
Moral: Never let your blood pressure get too far into the dangerous numbers and keep a bottle of Advil handy.

Dave VE7CNV's Truly Canadian Dictionary of Canadian Spelling: "This is a dictionary with Canadian English spelling. There are many dictionaries out there which call themselves 'Real Canadian' English dictionaries; however, I have never* seen one that really was. They all give priority to American spelling for such words as 'color' instead of listing it under the Canadian spelling of 'colour.' Some people say to just use a British dictionary; however, Canadian spelling is different in many cases."

Urgent / Recall Notice 60I-Reprogram ECM

My wife's '01 RAV4 has had the P0420/P0430 code (cat efficiency below threshold) occur since '03. When it first happened, I took it into the dealership and they replaced the cat under the 80K emissions warranty and forgot to reset the light so I did with my OBDII scanner. I thought all was well until the light came back on a couple days later. This time I read the code and it gave a lean code (P0171/P0174). I called the dealer again and they said it needs new O2 sensors and wanted to charge me an arm and a leg since O2 sensors are considered electrical and not emissions (stupid EPA rules, I know). Anyway, I told them no thank you and started to see if it indeed was the O2 sensors. I did lots of searching and it wasn't until I brought up the issue with a buddy of mine that is a Nissan/Infiniti master tech that I found the solution. He suggested that it's probably a dirty MAF sensor and said that older Maximas had the exact same problem. I figured it was worth a try so I took out the MAF (located on the back side of the intake tubing and is removed in about 10 minutes with 2 screws) and cleaned it with brake cleaner (also have used throttle body cleaner -- better idea). After waiting a few minutes to let it dry, I reinstalled the MAF sensor and reset the codes and voila! problem solved for good...at least for a year or so when it gets dirty again. Apparently Toyota's original ECM program's acceptable MAF readings is too narrow so when the MAF gets a little dirty it freaks out. I've had to clean the MAF two times since and every time the problem was solved (last year it registered the infamous P0420/P0430 code again and this year it threw the lean codes -- P0171/P0174).

Occasional problems on this vehicle are failure of the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor and the Engine Control Module (ECM) software.

Occasional problems on this vehicle are failure of the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor and the Engine Control Module (ECM) software. The MAF and ECM software will cause the check engine light to illuminate. Toyota has revised the software so the Check Engine Light will not illuminate falsely and set trouble codes related to the Catalyst System. Factory warranty covers this software update for 8 years or 80,000 miles. The cost to replace the MAF Sensor is estimated at $139.95 for parts and $52.00 for labor. The cost to recalibrate the ECM is $65.00 for labor. All prices are estimates based on $65.00 per flat rate hour and do not include diagnostic time or any applicable sales tax.

10. Textarea Backup (all sites except Gmail) - Lifehacker: "Top 10 Greasemonkey User Scripts, #10: If you spend a lot of time typing into web forms - whether it's for a blog, web mail, forum or comment - you know how painful it can be to accidentally close a tab or your browser and lose your work before you save it. The Textarea Backup script automatically saves the contents of your textareas every 10 keystrokes, whenever the area loses focus and every 10 seconds, for instant restore in case of an accident. (Note: there were some issues with this script auto-filling Gmail To: and BCC: fields, so by default it's disabled in Gmail, which does its own auto-saving anyway.)"
