Developing Scalable Series 40 Applications: A Guide for Java Developers
"Who do you partner with? Nokia developer platforms offer the highest volume opportunity for mobile developers, with an installed base measured in the hundreds of millions. Series 40 Developer Platform offers the highest volume opportunity in the family, and offers a robust technical platform including secure communications, mobile media, messaging, graphics, and Bluetooth. (MIDP 2.0, JSR 120, JSR 135, JSR 82).
How do you build it? Developing Scalable Series 40 Applications is an end-to-end solutions guide for Java programmers focusing on Nokia's Series 40 Developer Platform. It brings together two of the largest segments of the mobile marketplace, Nokia Series 40 handsets and the worldwide mobile Java developer community, and provides thorough and specific information on how to create scalable mobile applications. These applications will work on the newest Series 40 handsets (based on MIDP 2.0), serve the large installed base of MIDP 1.0 handsets, and scale up to serve owners of smartphones based on Series 60 Developer Platform, enterprise communicators based on Series 80 Developer Platform, and rich media devices based on Series 90 Developer Platform.
Developing Scalable Series 40 Applications details the technical underpinnings of the Series 40 Developer Platform. It includes not only the available APIs but also coding best practices, architectural considerations, and fully tested sample applications ready for download. The book includes plenty of specific tips; for example, pointing out the choices Nokia made when implementing optional APIs.
The book goes beyond presentation of methods and classes. Mobile devices serve a variety of highly specialized customer segments, and some differentiation among devices is necessary to create the high-volume opportunity developers can now tap. Additional differentiation occurs as new devices add features on top of existing feature sets. To serve the mobile mass market at a profit, the right technical approach is critical to avoid fragmenting an application's code base. This book addresses development approaches that allow applications to scale across devices and time. The authors devote a full chapter to code management, sharing tips on how to optimize the mobile experience for a variety of users without fragmenting the code base."

The Nokia Series 40 book
"The first official end-to-end solutions guide for every Nokia Series 40 developer
NokiaÕs Series 40 platform gives Java developers access to the worldÕs highest-volume, fastest-growing, and most exciting mobile markets. With close to 100 million units sold every year, the Series 40 devices are crucial for the commercial success for any mobile application. However, due to the physical constraints of the mass-market devices, it requires deep knowledge of the platform and advanced programming skills to develop effective Series 40 applications. Knowledge of the Series 40 platform can be applied to the Java environment on all Nokia devices including the Series 60 smartphones, Series 80 enterprise communicators and Series 90 rich media devices. To reduce duplicated development costs, it is also important to write scalable applications so that we can easily optimize them across different devices within and beyond the Series 40 platform. Now, there's an official developer's guide that can help you build high-performance and scalable Series 40 applications for both MIDP 1.0 and 2.0 devices.
Fully reviewed by NokiaÕs subject matter experts, this book covers the entire development processÑfrom design and coding through testing and deployment. The authors walk you through 11 complete example applications, presenting downloadable client and server source code you can use to jumpstart virtually any project. Along the way, they illuminate Series 40Õs technical underpinnings, review crucial architectural issues, introduce key mobile design patterns, discuss scalability and device optimization strategies and offer dozens of best practices and tipsÑmany never before published. Coverage includes "

Wireless Industry News - Cellphones get broken by tight jeans.
"Siemens in Sweden asked themselves: "What are the most common cellphone accidents"? 300 Swedish retailers participated in the survey by listing the most common reasons for end-user accidents.
To squeeze the handset in tight jeans, using the cellphone in heavy rain or throwing it on the ground in rage were some of the most common "stories/excuses for accidents". "We notice that people use their cellphones directly after coming out from the shower or a gym session, even out in the rain", says Magnus Svensson at The Phonehouse Sweden.
Ulf Sandberg Marketing Director at the Swedish company Krusell International adds; "Professional retailers around the world are very aware of the "situations" that users seem to run into. Highlighting the money and the trouble users can save themselves by using a case, the retailers will not only benefit from added sales but also customer satisfaction, which will create loyalty to their stores.”
According to the survey, the most common reason for a phone to break is that you simply drop it on the floor.
It might be surprising to hear that people have thrown their unit on the ground in rage, this is of course alarming, but obviously not uncommon says Titti Hagenfeldt, Marketing Manager at Siemens.
The most common reasons for "Mobile accidents" according to 300 Swedish retailers.
1. Dropped the mobile on the ground.
2. Squeezed the cellphone in tight jeans/pockets.
3. Used the handset in the rain.
4. Throw the device on the ground in rage.
5. The dog/child got hold of the mobile.
6. Dropped the cellphone in the toilette.
7. Dropped the handset into the sea.
8. Forgot the cellphone on the roof of the car.
9. Perspiration on the mobile during workout.
10. Dropped the handset in the snow."

Hugeness: PalmSource planning Linux-powered version of Palm OS - Engadget - www.engadget.com
"PalmSource, the company behind the Palm operating system, just dropped a bombshell on the industry by acquiring China MobileSoft Limited, a Chinese software company that has been working on a version of Linux for cellphones and mobile devices. What’s the dice? Windows Mobile has been putting the hurt on the PalmSource lately (they’ve been losing both licensees and marketshare), so the plan here is to strike back with a new Linux-based version of the Palm OS that would have the robustness and flexibility of Linux and the ease of use of Palm. No word on when this new Palm/Linux OS might become a reality, but PalmSource says that they’re still going to introduce Palm OS Cobalt, the next version of the software, next year."

Russell Beattie Notebook - Nokia Design Thoughts: Simplicity
"The new Nokia 6255 - a CDMA flip phone with video functionality running on the "Series 45" platform, will be launched soon and you can see that unlike many of their recent phone launches, Nokia has gone back to basics on the design. Fantastic. That phone is truly lustworthy - and not just because of the functionality, but because of the clean lines and useful design.
I think all of us Nokia fans are pretty sick of the wacky unusable keypads, odd shapes, and questionable usability aren't we? I mean, more power to Nokia for having the kahunas to try something new, but I'm sick of being an apologist. "Look at this great phone! Yeah, yeah, I know it's a bit weird. But it's so cool!" Now that they've been bitchslapped by the market in the last quarter it looks like they're going to get back to basics. Actually the quid-pro-quo may not be direct since the design for the 6255 probably happened years ago, but I think that they'll now make more of an effort go in that direction, starting with this phone.
I expect the 6255 to be huge success because it's both clean and functional. What's the hottest consumer product on the market right now? Right - the iPod Mini. Look at it. It's *ridiculously* simple in design and usability. It's not over-designed, it's not shockingly new, it's elegant and beautiful and clean. This is the future of all mobile products.
Consumers like simplicity, cleanliness and functionality. Apple truly understands this as does Sony - look at the PowerBooks and the SonyEricsson Z700 for examples. Look at TiVo. It should be a mantra for any consumer product development team: simplicity and functionality. The 6255 is a fantastic phone for this reason. It's not boring, it's beautiful. We've got enough clutter in our lives, no? The devices we carry with us during almost all our waking ours should not add to it."

Shrine to Spirits: - Chiew and Soju
Chiew and soju
What goes here?
This is a category for traditional Chinese and Korean (and others) grain spirits, chiew, soju, sul etc. Also included are their modern successors. Most East Asian non-whiskey, non-brandy spirits are here. Soju is often classified as a vodka, but it fits in here as well.A note on names: If the bottle has a romanised name on it, that is usually the name listed here. Other names are either romanised or translated here, whichever seems like a better idea. Accuracy is unfortunately not guaranteed.

StrutsTestCase for JUnit
"StrutsTestCase for JUnit is an extension of the standard JUnit TestCase class that provides facilities for testing code based on the Struts framework. StrutsTestCase provides both a Mock Object approach and a Cactus approach to actually run the Struts ActionServlet, allowing you to test your Struts code with or without a running servlet engine. Because StrutsTestCase uses the ActionServlet controller to test your code, you can test not only the implementation of your Action objects, but also your mappings, form beans, and forwards declarations. And because StrutsTestCase already provides validation methods, it's quick and easy to write unit test cases."

Russell Beattie Notebook - Bluetooth Crippled in Verizon's New Motorola V710
"So in case you were thinking about all the cool stuff you were going to be able to do via Bluetooth with your spanky new Moto V710 on Verizon's CDMA 2000 1x network, forget about it. It only supports handsfree use. Arguably, one of the main reasons that people have been so excited about this phone is the potential of using Bluetooth on a CDMA phone for the first time, but nope, the phone's been crippled.
First I tried to send the V710 an image I took with my S60 Nokia phone and it refused - even though I could see the phone while browsing Bluetooth devices. It didn't prompt to pair or anything, it just cancelled the transfer. Then Vineet went into the photos section of the Moto and tried to "send via Bluetooth" as you would normally do, but there was no option of that sort. Since my Moto A845 which has an identical UI has that ability, this phone has obviously been made so that only Bluetooth headsets are supported.
Gotta love carrier paranoia, no?
Update: Alright! I was wrong (and happy about it). Charles gave me the heads up - it looks like the V710 does indeed support dial up networking! I just confirmed and though something went wrong (not exactly sure what) the phone definitely connected and dialed. It's still too bad the other profiles aren't supported - sending photos to other phones and my computer is probably the number one use of Bluetooth for me. Syncing as well - I wonder if the phone can be synced? Doesn't look like it."

java.net: AppFuse: Start Your J2EE Web Apps
" One of the hardest parts about J2EE development is getting started. There is an immense amount of open source tools for web app development. Making a decision on which technologies to use can be tough -- actually beginning to use them can be even more difficult. Once you've decided to use Struts and Hibernate, how do you go about implementing them? If you look on the Hibernate site or the Struts site, you'll probably have a hard time finding any information on integrating the two. What if you want to throw Spring into the mix? As a developer, the best way for me to learn is by viewing sample apps and tutorials that explain how to extend those applications. In order for me to learn (and remember) how to integrate open source technologies such as Hibernate, Spring, Struts, and Ant/XDoclet, I created AppFuse. The beauty of AppFuse is you can actually get started with Hibernate, Spring, and Struts without even knowing much about them. Using test-driven development, AppFuse and its tutorials will show you how to develop a J2EE web application quickly and efficiently."

The New York Times > Dining & Wine > Tuna's Red Glare? It Could Be Carbon Monoxide
BUYERS of fresh tuna, whether at the sushi bar or the supermarket, often look for cherry-red flesh to tell them that the fish is top-quality. But it has become increasingly likely that the fish is bright red because it has been sprayed with carbon monoxide.
The global seafood trade has expanded so much over the last decade that tuna, once a seasonal delicacy, is available year-round. But getting it to consumers while it still looks fresh is difficult. Tuna quickly turns an unappetizing brown (or chocolate, as it is called in the industry), whether it is fresh or conventionally frozen and thawed.
Carbon monoxide, a gas that is also a component of wood smoke, prevents the flesh from discoloring. It can even turn chocolate tuna red, according to some who have seen the process.
People in the seafood industry estimate that 25 million pounds of treated tuna, about 30 percent of total tuna imports, were brought into the United States last year, mostly from processors in Southeast Asia. Retailers in the United States buy it already treated.
The Food and Drug Administration says the process is harmless. But Japan, Canada and the countries of the European Union have banned the practice because of fears that it could be used to mask spoiled fish.
Carbon monoxide preserves only the color of the fish, not its quality. Suppliers and retailers who use the treated fish say the process allows them to sell high-quality, flash-frozen fish that still looks good enough to eat. Jerry Bocchino, an owner of Pescatore, a fish store in Grand Central Market in New York, said that his sales of tuna have tripled since he switched to the treated kind two months ago.
"With fresh tuna, you're always racing the clock to keep the color and keep it from spoiling," Mr. Bocchino said. "And once it turns brown, no one wants to buy it. People love the color of this stuff."
Tim Lauer, a seafood dealer in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, said that most sushi bars and supermarkets there have switched to the product since it was introduced in the late 1990's. "I've lost all my sushi customers for tuna, since I won't sell it," he said.
Just because a slice of tuna is brown, it does not mean it is not fresh. And other factors determine the color, including the fat content, species and cut. The finest fresh bluefin, which sells for up to $40 a pound at Tokyo's wholesale fish markets, is not a deep red but a pale pink because of the fine web of white fat that permeates the red flesh. Top-quality toro is often a brownish red.
But for most consumers around the world, vendors say, lollipop-red flesh signals freshness and quality. Tuna treated with carbon monoxide is bright red when first defrosted, and fades within a couple of days to a watermelon pink. But "you could put it in the trunk of your car for a year, and it wouldn't turn brown," said one sales representative at Anova Foods, a distributor in Atlanta, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The use of carbon monoxide in food is hardly new, as any barbecue or smoked salmon fan should know. (Wood smoke contains carbon monoxide.) But the gas used by many overseas producers, although tasteless, is more concentrated; it can be as much as 100 percent carbon monoxide, said Bill Kowalski, an owner of Hawaii International Seafood.
American processors like Hawaii International and Anova Foods are racing to market their own versions of the technology, using wood smoke that is filtered to remove the elements that make food taste smoky. These processors use lower concentrations of the gas and tag their product with trademarked names like Tasteless Smoke, Clearsmoke and Crystal Fresh.
Opinion about carbon-monoxide-treated tuna is sharply divided, and illustrates the complex issues that consumers have to wade through at the fish market.
To supporters like Mr. Bocchino, Mr. Kowalski and Dr. Steve Otwell, a researcher at the University of Florida, carbon monoxide treatment is an important advance in food safety that accommodates the realities of the marketplace. Instead of fresh tuna that is likely to spoil quickly, they reason, consumers get a high-quality frozen product that can be transported safely, thawed when needed, and keep its fresh look. "The industry scrambles to get fresh tuna to market, but the reality is that by the time a long-line Pacific tuna makes it to an American supermarket, it could be as much as 30 days out of the water," Dr. Otwell said. "That's much more of a health risk than treated tuna, as long as the raw material is good and the treatment is controlled."
Roman Choudhury, the manager of two sushi restaurants in Manhattan, buys treated tuna when he cannot get it fresh, particularly for tuna rolls. "At my price point, it's almost impossible to have a steady supply of fresh tuna," he said. "And people always, always want tekka maki."
Detractors call the process risky and dishonest. "There's no reason to do this other than to deceive the consumer," Mr. Lauer said. "There are natural solutions to the problem of browning."
One is ultra-low-temperature freezing, which keeps tuna at about 80 degrees below zero for months or even years without browning. But maintaining such low temperatures during the long trip from boat to plate is a very expensive proposition.
Caroline Smith DeWaal, food safety director for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a nutrition advocacy group, said, "Anything that masks the true age of a piece of fish is a public safety risk."
As tuna ages, it becomes more likely to cause scombrotoxin poisoning, which is rarely severe or fatal. It is the most common form of food poisoning from seafood in the United States, the Center said.
The F.D.A. has put carbon-monoxide-treated tuna on its list of substances generally regarded as safe. The agency permits its use to preserve the color of fresh tuna, not to enhance brown tuna, and requires stores to label treated fish. But they often do not.
What does all this mean at the market? Any tuna that is hot pink has probably been treated with carbon monoxide. Tuna that is bright red may be extremely fresh, and therefore very expensive, or may have been treated with the gas.
"Outside of Hawaii bright red tuna that is selling for less than $12 a pound is probably treated," Mr. Lauer said. "On the other hand, there's nothing to stop people from selling treated tuna for $20 a pound if they can get away with it."

Windows 2000 Firewall
"Windows 2000 as well as Windows XP Professional both allow the end user to construct a IPSec Firewall without having to rely on canned or 'for purchase' third-party solutions. I myself am amazed when paging through industry journals that spend most of their time painting most Firewall systems as half-baked because those systems only prevent ingress packets and not egress packets. I must admit that after witnessing Windows XP's sorry excuse for Firewalling (this indeed is half-baked), I was heartened to see that Microsoft left the IPSec functionality alone while upgrading Windows. The only sin Microsoft is guilty of in this regard is burying the IPSec system so very deep in the system, where in Windows 2000 it's nearly at the surface. Windows 9x is completely helpless in this regard and Linux uses a different system altogether so this is primarily going to just concentrate on Windows 2000."

Download Frigate3Lite 3.24 - A new breed of file managers that is more of a command center, rather then a simple file copying and renaming automation
Frigate is a new breed of file managers that
is more of a command center, rather then a simple “file copying and
renaming automation utility”.
The first important distinction is that it comes with functional
modules that can be plugged in or disabled. In particular, the program
has built-in file viewers (DBF, RTF, HTML, DOC, Excel, Hex), smart
assistant utilities (TreeNotes, StartUp Manager, Calculator, SmartPad,
Directory Size Manager), file navigation options (Favorites, Bookmarks,
Quick View), mp3 tag editor, image viewer and editor, and internal
compression agent (Zip, Arj, Rar, Ace, Jar, Ha, Lha and four other
formats).
Second, the program features own text editor with syntax support for
most popular programming and scripting languages, like C, C++, Perl,
Java, Pascal, VBScript, Bat, HTML, XML and others. Plus, there is a
method navigator feature that can instantly find a desired function or
procedure.
Other developer-friendly options are HTML support system and export in HTML and RTF with color highlighting.
There also are a built-in FTP client, network support, file/folder
synchronization options, task scheduler, image converter, file search
engine, offline browser, recent file actions history feature and much
more. And yes, there are multiple automation and batch processing
options for common file operations (copying, moving, deleting,
re-naming), including an option to schedule them.
Best of all, the program features a clean and simple interface, free of
any extraneous features. The plug-in module program architecture allows
users to have access to a wealth of file managing options, without
cluttering their computer screen with countless windows. To access a
module, users only have to click an appropriate tab. All windows can be
minimized. And while the program targets advanced computer users, the
learning curve for it is rather low.

Gigabyte GA-7DX Revision 4.3 and AMD Athlon XP 2400+ Thorton
The website say the 2600+ is possible but they haven't tested it and it's pretty hard to find a 266Mhz FSB 2600+. Most of the ones available are Bartons and those won't run since they use a 333Mhz FSB. I'm using the latest F8 bios and it went really smooth.
There isn't much difference between the Thoroughbred and the Thorton, but the chip is bigger on the Thorton (more rectangular) so it offers more surface area to transfer to the heatsink.
I used to have a Duron 1Ghz which would run in the high 40's C range, but with the new 2400+ it's dropped down to the high 30's. So a newer faster chip that runs cooler is awsome.
I was tempted to try one of the AMD Athlon XP-M mobility chips but I had the chip tested in a motherboard ( Asrock )using the VIA KM266 and it didn't work. It posted, but since that motherboard doesn't have any overclocking ability it couldn't be tweaked to work.
If you're in a similar situation you should go out and upgrade now since AMD introduced the Semprons and those won't work for you since they use the 333 Mhz FSB. I expect the older 266Mhz Athlons prices to go up.

Bink.nu: Windows XP Video Decoder
The Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility helps you determine if an MPEG-2 video decoder (also called a DVD decoder) is installed on your Windows XP computer and whether or not the decoder is compatible with Windows Media Player 10 and Windows XP Media Center Edition.
An MPEG-2 decoder is software that allows you to play DVDs and files that contain video content that was encoded in the MPEG-2 format (such as DVR-MS files, MPG files, and some AVI files).
If you encounter a problem while using Windows Media Player 10 to play a DVD or to synchronize (copy) recorded TV shows to a Portable Media Center or other device, use this utility to verify that you have a compatible MPEG-2 decoder installed on your computer.
This utility:
• Lists all the MPEG-2 video decoders that appear in your Windows registry (a database that contains information about the hardware and software installed in your computer).
• Indicates whether each decoder listed in the registry is marked as compatible with Windows XP Media Center Edition and whether any decoder listed in the registry is marked as the preferred video decoder.
• Indicates whether each decoder listed in the registry is marked as compatible with the synchronization feature of Windows Media Player 10.
• Lets you designate which installed decoder that you want Windows Media Player 10 to use when synchronizing DVR-MS files to a portable device. This is known as the preferred video decoder.
• Lets you undo any changes the utility makes to your Windows registry

Recommended Heatsinks :: SilentPCReview.com
CPU heatsinks are usually packaged and marketed with a fan, which explains the rise of the moniker HSF, heatsink fan. Most hardware web sites test the HSF as an integrated unit. For SPCR, this is not an ideal way to do things, mainly because almost all fans supplied with HS are too loud. If we had to test and use them in stock form, we would recommend less than 1% of all the HSF on the market.

The service is available in all areas of the United States and Canada.
The most notable feature of the Calendar Updates TV Listings is the ability to add any television show directly to the Outlook calendar. As a user browses the TV Listings, programs can be added to their calendar by clicking a calendar icon in the grid. The program is then added to their calendar with a convenient reminder.
Calendar Updates provides three formats for installing the TV Listings, depending on the version of Outlook used. The TV Listings are available for Outlook 2003, Outlook XP (2002) and Outlook 2000. Non-Outlook users are also welcome to use the service via the Internet. Any calendaring application that supports the vCalendar format can benefit from the Add to Calendar feature.
