SQL Server 2005 Part 3 - High Availability and Scalability Enhancements - Failover Clustering
In the previous article of this series, we started reviewing high availability and scalability enhancements in SQL Server 2005 (based on its recent Beta 2 release) by discussing database mirroring. In this article, we will continue exploring the same area of functionality, shifting our attention to failover clustering. We will also provide comparison of both features, which should help in recognizing the types of scenarios for which each of them is better suited.Filed in: database
Ballerina Dad: My Crazy Diabetes Fundraiser
If I get $500 in pledges for JDRF, I will run the Vancouver Sun Run dressed as a 500 pound ballerina! I'm raising money for the JUVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION, to help my little 6-year-old ballerina. My daughter, Mikaela, has had diabetes since she was 2. She gets her blood tested 6-8 times every day, and she wears an insulin pump that is attached to her body all the time. And she really likes tiaras, tutus, and pink ballet outfits.Filed in: fundraiser running ballerina

New Scientist Breaking News - US and Canadian skiers get smart armour
Filed in: gadgetThe resulting material exhibits a material property called "strain rate sensitivity". Under normal conditions the molecules within the material are weakly bound and can move past each with ease, making the material flexible. But the shock of sudden deformation causes the chemical bonds to strengthen and the moving molecules to lock, turning the material into a more solid, protective shield.
In laboratory testing, d3o-guards provided as much protection as most conventional protective materials, its makers claim. But Phil Green, research director at d3o Labs, says it is difficult to precisely measure the material's properties because the hardening effect only last as long as the impact itself.
However, Green believes it may be possible to alter the properties of d3o for new impact-protection and anti-trauma applications. "There are certainly opportunities to dabble with the chemistry and enhance the effect," he told New Scientist.
Another potential application may be sound-proofing. The propagation of sound waves should generate a similar strain to an impact, so it may be feasible to create a material that becomes more sound proof in response to increasing noise. "It could have some very interesting, unexplored properties," Green says.

I, Cringely: Stupid Net Tricks - Congress Thinks It Can Force Technical Changes on the Internet, but Congress Is Wrong
When this column began in the spring of 1997, the Telecommunications Act of 1996 was a new law that had changed how communication services were provided in the United States, reflecting the new possibilities of what was then popularly called the Information Super Highway. Nine years later, Congress is now in the throes of rewriting that same law to reflect new realities and lessons learned, with the result that there is a lot of jostling for political position. Telephone and cable TV companies find themselves, this time, on the same side of the discussion, pushing Quality of Service arguments they say are necessary for their own survival. Companies like Google and Yahoo, Amazon and eBay -- companies that exist solely in cyberspace as corporate citizens of these same networks -- say that what the telcos and cable companies propose will hurt their businesses and business in general. Some techies worry that a counter-reformation of sorts is taking place that will literally destroy the Internet, taking with it some or all of the gains that people have made through broader and easier communication.Filed in: blog

The term "earphones" covers a range of products that vary widely in appearance and in technology, so we'll narrow the field down to models that can be used on the go. Even so, there's still a wide range of diversity in that category. There are many different ways of "injecting" sound into a pair of ears; each has its advantages and disadvantages, and is better suited to a particular type of user's tastes and listening habits.Filed in: headphones audio

Renu-it Battery Regenerator, Aa, Aaa at Cyberguys.com
I wonder if this thing really works. It would take a whole lot of batteries about 50+ to pay this thing off. There is also the matter that it's a seen on TV product and I have a real issue with that since I'm a snob.
The ReNu-IT charger safely and reliably regenerates "dead" alkaline, titanium and rechargeable batteries. With overcharge, overheat and short-circuit protection, the ReNu-IT charger safely brings alkaline batteries back to as much as 95% of their new condition. ReNu-IT also charges standard NiCad and NiMH rechargeable AA and AAA batteries.
CyberGuysThere has never been a viable or practical solution for recycling normal household batteries, until now! The Renu-It Battery Renewer will allow you to save the environment, time and money! RenuIt brings back the life to disposable batteries up to 100 times and enhances new batteries up to 15%! Works on Alkaline, Titanium, RAM, NiCad and NiMH “AA” and “AAA” size batteries. You can even mix sizes and types as you renew up to 4 batteries at once!
SeenOnTV.comt should be stressed that this process does not recharge the battery. Recharging the battery would mean putting something into it; that “something” is what is used to then generate the power. Renu IT does not put anything of substance into the battery; we just release the potential that is already there.

15 Seconds : Reusable Components in ASP.NET 2.0, Object Binding and Precompilation
15 Seconds : Reusable Components in ASP.NET 2.0, Object Binding and Precompilation
Introduction
One of the excellent features of ASP.NET 2.0 is the ability to create reusable components without having to compile them even once. This is possible with the addition of the new pre-defined directory named Code. The Code directory is a special directory that is used as a placeholder for storing all the reusable components. Any reusable component placed in this directory will be automatically referenced and made available to all the pages in the Web site. ASP.NET 2.0 not only makes creating reusable components easier, but also allows us to easily consume them by providing a new data source control named ObjectDataSource. With this new control, it is possible to bind to an output of an object's method directly to data-bound controls such as dropdownlist, gridview and so on.Creating Reusable Components in ASP.NET 2.0
A cool and useful new feature in ASP.NET Whidbey is the addition of the \Code directory. The \Code directory, like the \bin directory, is a special directory used by ASP.NET, but with a twist. While the \bin directory is designed for storing pre-compiled assemblies used by your application, the \Code directory is designed for storing class files to be compiled dynamically at runtime. This allows you to store classes for business logic components, data access components, and so on in a single location in your application and use them from any page. Because the classes are compiled dynamically at runtime and are automatically referenced by the application containing the \Code directory, you don't need to build the project before deploying it, nor do you need to explicitly add a reference to the class, and you can easily make changes to a component and deploy it with a simple XCOPY or with a drag-and-drop operation. In addition to simplifying the deployment and the referencing of components, the \Code directory also greatly simplifies the creation and accessing of resource files (.resx) used in localization, as well as automatically generating and compiling proxy classes for WSDL files (.wsdl).

Boing Boing: Songbird, the "open source iTunes killer," flies today
Boing Boing: Songbird, the "open source iTunes killer," flies today
looks very iTunes-ish, may be very cool if you can build your own custom media player with store integration
The Songbird site is overloaded right now, but here's a download mirror, and another. Some discussion on this digg thread.
A team led by ex-Winamp-er Rob Lord today released a preview edition of Songbird, a desktop media player that offers an open source alternative to services like Apple's iTunes and the Windows Media Player. Instead of connecting to one locked store full of DRMmed goods, it can connect to any and all available music (and video) on the internet.
BB: So why did you guys build this?
RL: People should have more choice about music and video formats, and where they get their music. Imagine what your experience of the web wold be like if IE connected only to microsoft.com. That's what digital networked media players are like today. Fairplay [Ed. Note: Apple's proprietary DRM] is the 8-track of our generation, and those formats may become obsolete a lot sooner than people using those services realize. Songbird can connect to any a la carte media store -- downloadable music, radio, video, P2P networks, and classes of services that haven't been created yet. Services like iTunes -- where everybody has to shop from the same store -- are like walled garden online services back in the early days. AOL, Prodigy. That's how we connected to the 'net then. Songbird is to iTunes what the Firefox browser is to those old, limiting online services. It opens up the whole internet to you as a music browsing experience.BB: Apart from the ability to connect to lots of different sources, what will Songbird do differently?
RL: The opportunity to innovate is stymied by architecture. All of the popular media players out there have pretty much the same feature set on the desktop -- when you leave aside what's possible when you connect to the internet, they all do pretty much the same thing these days. Rip, mix, burn, play, organize playlists. But plug them in to the internet, and there's so much more they could be doing. The possibilities for networked services are totally untapped. For instance, [Winamp co-creator] Justin Frankel created a collaborative jamming service, and you can't do that inside any commercial media player now. You'll be able to do those kinds of things inside Songbird.BB: What's in it for those providers?
RL: It's an open format, so they can do deep integration into our player, and reach new audiences. We built Songbird on the Mozilla Foundation's XULRunner platform, which is also used by Firefox and the Thunderbird email client. Firefox is very widely used now, there are 400 extensions, everybody knows it's as much of a movement as a piece of software. The difference between the Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers is substantial, but it's nothing like the difference between iTunes or Windows Music and Songbird.BB: Songbird's logo is a cute, rotund, whistling birdie -- but what's up with that puff of gas coming out of his posterior? Is your mascot farting?
RL: Sorry, bad reception (SSSHHCSRRGRRR CRACKLE)

Fix Backlink tags in Blogger (e.g. <\$BlogItemBacklinkCreate\$> )
If you are having a problem with your blogger backlinks tags showing this <\$BlogItemBacklinkCreate\$> instead of "Create a Link" the problem is in your template code. If the code couldn't be added to your template automatically it displayed the code for you to add. The problem was the code showed the delimiters and that is messing things up. You need to delete the slashes before the dollar signs in the tags.
<\$BlogItemBacklinkCreate\$> ==> <$BlogItemBacklinkCreate$>
There are a eight of these to replace, so make sure you get them all.
There are two sections of template code that relate to backlinks. One section simply creates the links that readers see next to your posts. The other section displays the backlinks themselves. We'll look at these two parts separately.

The only thing worse than being trapped in a sleeping bag, is needing to go to the toilet in one. Well cast those fears aside as the new Selk'bag is here. This sleeping bag is more like a body bag ( not the corpse ones ). It's padded and shaped to the human form and allows free movement both in and out of sleep, where traditional sleeping bags don't. The various ties and adjustment belts allow for a very snug fir which keeps the warmth in and gives you further control when moving about. What to do with the empty Whisky/glass bottles; Whisky PC by MetkuMods - Because you love your hardware!
Who would have thought, modding a whisky bottle to hold a computer. Crazy!
I already had a powerful computer setup so I wanted something more quiet, small and low power consumptioning to function as a basic home server. I love to tinker with hardware etc. so I wanted to make something quite unique for a case. I have seen many nice and creative cases before but none of them were made out of a bottle. In November I bought an industrial 3.5' SBC board (with Socket370). For the project I selected a 1.5 litre Ballantine's bottle for case. That was the proper size and shape for the task at hand.

www.540i6.com - BMW Ultimate Cupholder Cup Holder
The stock cup holders in most BMWs are useless and I couldn't find an after-market cup holder that worked well and wasn't way over-priced, so finally I designed one myself. It's a nicer version of one that I made a long time ago. I've used it in all three of the BMWs that I've owned (E34, E36, and E39). It's the best approach for a practical cup holder that I've found yet for the 5 Series cars.
It's a simple, one-piece, all-metal design, made from 20 guage 304-grade stainless steel. It's large enough to actually be useful in the real world. Unlike the stock cupholders, it's basically indestructable - no moving parts or little plastic pieces to break. I tried a number of more complex approaches, but, as in the case of many things, the most simple seems to work best. (It's a cup holder - how complicated does it need to be?)
.
.
.
I have these CNC cut by laser, and then form and finish them by hand. Even though you don't really see them much in use, I wanted something that looked nice enough to put into the cars. I think it came out pretty well. If interested, you can get one here: BMW cup holders at http://www.ultimatecupholders.com. They also work with Porsche, Mercedes, Audi, Acura NSX and other cars with a similar console arrangement.

Reuters.com: 159 mph? That's where we draw the line..
LONDON (Reuters) - A British traffic officer caught driving at 159 mph but cleared by a court of speeding and dangerous driving faces a legal move at the High Court in London Wednesday to convict him.
The Attorney General will appeal against the acquittal of constable Mark Milton and seek a High Court order that the advanced police driver should be convicted over his high speed blast in the early hours of December 5, 2003.
Milton, a qualified advanced driver, was recorded by an onboard camera in his upgraded unmarked Vauxhall Vectra police car traveling at 91 mph in a 30 mph zone and hitting 159 mph on the M54 motorway. The legal limit in Britain is 70 mph.
Milton's defense, accepted by the local judge in May 2005, was that he had taken the car on a test run around Telford, Shropshire, where he was based.
The judge said the prosecution had failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that he had driven dangerously and that the car was being 'used for police purposes' when the incident occurred.
The ruling prompted outrage in the media and condemnation from motoring groups.
Wednesday, lawyers for the Attorney General will argue the district judge erred in law when he made his judgment.

Reuters.com: Rails missing; it's hard to keep track...
BERLIN (Reuters) - Thieves have dismantled and carted away some 5 kms (3 miles) of disused rail track close to the German town of Weimar, railway operator Deutsche Bahn said on Friday.
The railway operator said the thieves would probably sell the tracks as scrap metal with the damage amounting to at least 200,000 euros ($241,500).
Deutsche Bahn said it had noticed the missing track after the mayor of a town alongside the train line phoned in to check if the dismantling was planned.
'This was a major criminal operation, because you cannot simply take the tracks and carry them away,' said a spokesman for the rail operator.
VMware moves to free with Server product | The Register
VMware moves to free with Server product | The Register
This is great, now Microsoft VirtualServer will have to try even harder to comptete. Maybe Microsoft will have to give away a free version as well.
As anticipated, VMware has created a free version of its server partitioning software in the hopes of drawing new customers to its technology. In addition, the move counters open source rival XenSource, which gives away core server virtualization technology known as a hypervisor.
The free product will be called VMware Server and will join the Workstation, GSX Server and ESX Server products. VMware Server relates most closely to the midrange GSX Server product often used by VMware customers to test and and develop software packages. The high-end ESX Server is used for production applications and actually slots in below operating systems such as Windows and Linux, whereas GSX Server and the upcoming VMware Server run on top of the OS.
.
.
.
The VMware Server, for example, has a feature not even present in GSX Server. It supports Intel's VT technology for improving virtualization performance. In addition, it supports 64-bit guest operating systems - including Solaris x86 - and has support for virtual SMPs. So, it's not just some crippled, low-end product.
Next week, a beta version of VMware Server will be available here. The product is expected to be fully baked in the first half of this year, and VMware expects to sell plenty of support contracts behind it. Over time, it will effectively replace GSX Server.

Our in-house testers have found the 'Super Spork' to be superior to others tested particularly with noodles. 'The Spoon end plowed through severely frozen Ice Cream without making our hands cold'. 'The knife edge worked great for spreading jam on crackers in the middle of our day hike for that little extra energy'.'We also loved the price. It's affordable and if it's lost, I won't cry'

Sounds convenient to have two people able to use the same computer at the same time on different screens.
The MiniQ MagicTwin series barebone system is the world’s first multi-user enabled SFF solution available in the market. The special designed 2-user-system allows two users to share the computing power of a single PC system. With integrated circuitry onboard, the MagicTwin® barebone comes with innovative software, the MagicTwin, allowing 2 users to be connected to it and runs up to two (2) stations directly from it simultaneously. The unique and copyright-protected technology enables each of the 2 users to feel like having himself his own Windows-XP computer. Each user needs to have himself his own keyboard, mouse, sound device, and monitor. All remaining PC hardware are shared, even the IP.
Both users can operate on their own station concurrently, similar to the operation on a standard PC, the Windows applications to create and edit documents, to do web surfing, to access email, just to name a few. There is no obvious delay because of the Time-slicing/Multiplexing technology built-in. Each user gets an exact and extremely short defined moment to access to the PC system, devices, applications and Windows itself. Resources are only claimed for nanoseconds at a time. Both users get from Windows and the PC, what they really need when they need it! The MagicTwin solution turns the single PC into a cost-effective multi-user system.
The setup is intuitive and easy. In only a few minutes, users can install and start using their new workstation. No network administrator is needed as everything to network the workstations together is done automatically with the MagicTwin software. You can add immediately additional user station to the single system and turn one PC into two.
